In two weeks, I begin my junior year in high school. This means that I will be applying for colleges in just one year! I need to keep my grades up, do well on my SAT/ACT’s, score lots of goals for my lacrosse team (that will be lots of fun!!!) and…. participate in some extracurricular activities that make me stand out from other college applicants. For possible extracurricular activities, I am considering the following absolutely crazy idea: since I go to high school just outside of Washington DC and since there is a big 2020 Presidential election next year, perhaps I can somehow get involved in the 2020 Presidential election. My high school has this Washington Program that allows juniors and seniors to do internships inside of DC in places like Capitol Hill. May be I can arrange that my Washington Program project is involved with the Presidential election somehow. But exactly how, I don’t quite know.
Here is another extracurricular activity I can consider, Amazon is moving its second world-wide headquarters – Amazon calls it their HQ2 right down the street from my school. Check this photo out. I am driving right down the street from my high school and BAM I see this big sign up on a building right in front of me “Welcome Our New Neighbor Amazon”. I read up on this and Amazon is going to have 25,000+ nerds working right down the street from my high school AND Virginia Tech is building a $1 billion campus in the same area to supply Amazon with the technology workers it needs. This massive sign on this building made me think the following crazy idea…. “May be I can do an internship with Amazon?” That would be cool!
Hey, perhaps I can merge these two extracurricular activities: do an internship with Amazon that is involved with the 2020 Presidential election. That sounds very cool but very crazy. Exactly what I am thinking I am not yet quite sure. I need to take some time and think out the possibilities with this idea. Perhaps I can start a movement promoting the role of AI, cloud technology and 5G networking in the government of the future. I would think Amazon would support this and I know a candidate like Andrew Yang would dig this! If I can pull this off, I am quite certain this extra curricular activity would make my college applications stand out from the crowd! That’s the ultimate goal here!!!
Let me think about this some more. I know this is an absolutely crazy idea but it is worth considering. I will ask around to get some feedback on this crazy idea. I am sure my parents as well as other family members and friends will have lots of comments on this idea. I just hope they are easy on me!!! Stay tuned for the next blog post. I will report back some feedback, or better yet, family members and friends will add their own comments to this idea.

Wow Andres this proves that you have grown into a smart young man.
Although I don’t participate in politics because I believe every body that works in the government are liars and thiefs.but let’s focus on your wonderful and crazy Idea.its big !
I think you should go for it.I am sure you will get wonderful Ideas from your mentor your Dad.but I know can do it
You been doing so well in school and you have carry yourself as a teenager with I am so proud of you because a kid your age this days don’t think about their future.but we support you.
Love T Dog.
Thanks Tia! This is why we call you the Mayor of Columbia Road! You are so supportive to all of us. We are having fun with this blog and just experimenting. It is an interesting 2020 campaign. It is interesting to see how Internet technology will be discussed during the campaign. Andrew Yang sure is discussing it!
Why not volunteer in a political campaign? Which one of your local representatives is running & get involved. They may make you canvas neighborhoods. I’ve seen high school students do this. I don’t know how you would mix Amazon and politics now because I don’t think they will be open on time here, but I think looking at types of legislation for technology would be good mix of the two.
Thank you Ms D for your comments and suggestions. I will definitely consider this. Apparently, Amazon has some offices in the Arlington/Crystal City area right now. As you mention, the new 25,000+ employee major campus is not open yet. I will investigate this idea further and let you know what I find out. Once again, thanks for your support and suggestions! We hope to see you and the family soon!
